Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning for the teeth and gums. It is commonly recommended when gum disease has begun, and plaque and tartar have collected below the gumline where a routine cleaning does not reach. At Sam's Smile Dental in Humble, we offer this treatment to help patients get their gum health back on track.
What the Treatment Involves
- Scaling — removing plaque and hardened tartar from the tooth surfaces, including areas below the gumline.
- Root planing — smoothing the root surfaces so the gums can reattach more easily and bacteria have fewer places to collect.
When Patients Typically Seek It
Gum disease often develops quietly, but some signs are worth noticing:
- Bleeding gums — especially when brushing or flossing.
- Swollen or tender gums — redness or puffiness along the gumline.
- Persistent bad breath — a taste or odor that does not go away with brushing.
- Gum recession or deep pockets — gums that look like they are pulling away from the teeth.
Only an exam can tell whether you need a deep cleaning or a different kind of care.
Caring for Your Gums Afterward
Deep cleaning removes buildup, but daily habits keep the gums healthy. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between the teeth, and keeping up with regular dental visits all help prevent buildup from returning. Our team can talk with you about what your gums need and what to expect from treatment. If you have questions about your own situation, we are glad to go over them with you.
