Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening is a check of the mouth, lips, tongue, and surrounding areas for changes that may need a closer look. Finding unusual tissue early gives patients and their care providers more options, which is why screening is a common part of dental care.

What a Screening Looks For

A screening is a careful visual and hands-on check for signs that something in the mouth has changed. Examples include:

  • Sores that don't heal — an ulcer or sore that lingers beyond a couple of weeks.
  • Red or white patches — areas of discolored tissue on the gums, tongue, cheeks, or floor of the mouth.
  • Lumps or thickened areas — bumps or rough spots in the mouth or along the neck and jaw.
  • Persistent soreness or numbness — discomfort, trouble chewing or swallowing, or a feeling that something is stuck in the throat.

Who Should Pay Attention

Anyone can develop oral health changes, but some factors are linked with higher risk. These include tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, HPV infection, extended sun exposure to the lips, and a personal or family history of cancer. Many early changes cause little or no discomfort, so you may not notice them on your own.

Talk With Our Team

A screening is not a diagnosis. If something looks unusual, the next step may be monitoring it, additional testing, or a referral for further evaluation. If you've noticed a sore, patch, or lump, or you have questions about your own risk, let our team at Sam’s Smile Dental in Humble know. We can talk through what you've noticed and what to do next.
