Tooth Extraction & Wisdom Teeth Removal
Tooth Extraction & Wisdom Teeth Removal
Sometimes a tooth can't be saved, or it is causing problems for the teeth around it. Removing it can relieve pain, clear up infection, and protect your overall oral health. At Sam's Smile Dental in Humble, we can talk with you about whether extraction makes sense and what your options are afterward.
When extraction may be recommended
- Severe decay or damage — a tooth broken or decayed beyond what a filling, crown, or root canal can repair.
- Infection — an abscess or gum disease that has affected the tooth's support.
- Crowding — teeth removed to make room, sometimes as part of orthodontic planning.
- Impacted wisdom teeth — third molars that can't fully emerge and may cause pain, swelling, or damage to neighboring teeth.
Planning your treatment
Wisdom teeth vary in position and root shape, so good imaging helps. Our office has cone beam CT, which creates three-dimensional images that can help show what's going on beneath the surface. If you feel anxious about having a tooth removed, tell our team so we can talk through what will help you feel at ease.
After the tooth is removed
Healing takes some time, and your dental team will explain how to care for the area. If you're missing a tooth, you may want to talk about replacing it with options such as a bridge, dental implant, or denture, since gaps can lead to shifting teeth and changes in your bite.
