Dental Emergency
Dental Emergency
A dental emergency is any sudden problem with a tooth, the gums, or the mouth that needs prompt attention, often because of pain, bleeding, swelling, or an injury. At Sam’s Smile Dental in Humble, TX, Dental Emergency is one of the services we offer for patients who can’t wait for a routine visit.
Common Situations
Not every dental problem is urgent, but these are reasons people often seek care quickly:
- Severe toothache — ongoing or throbbing pain can point to decay, infection, or an inflamed nerve.
- Chipped or broken tooth — a crack can leave sharp edges or expose sensitive inner layers.
- Knocked-out tooth — time matters, so seek care as soon as you can.
- Lost filling or crown — the tooth underneath may be exposed and sensitive.
- Swelling or abscess — a swollen gum or face may signal an infection that needs evaluation.
What You Can Do Before You Come In
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can help with swelling. If a tooth has been knocked out, hold it by the crown rather than the root, and avoid scrubbing it. Don’t place aspirin directly on the gums, since it can irritate the tissue.
