Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once in place, it can support a crown, a bridge, or a denture. Many people consider implants when they want a replacement that is anchored in the jaw rather than resting on the gums or neighboring teeth.

What an Implant Is Made Of

  • Implant post — the part set into the jawbone, which acts as an artificial tooth root.
  • Abutment — a connector that attaches to the post and holds the visible restoration.
  • Restoration — the crown, bridge, or denture that replaces the visible part of the missing tooth or teeth.

When Patients Consider Implants

People often ask about implants after losing a tooth to decay, gum disease, or injury. They may also look into them when a bridge or removable denture feels unsatisfying. Because implants rely on the jawbone, the health of your bone and gums matters. A thorough exam is the way to find out whether implants suit your situation.
