Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a dental procedure that reshapes gum tissue, and sometimes the bone beneath it, to expose more of a tooth's natural structure. It is often used to prepare a tooth for a restoration, or to change the look of a smile where the teeth seem short.

Why Patients Seek It

  • Restorative needs — a tooth that has broken, decayed, or worn down near the gumline may not have enough exposed structure to hold a crown or filling securely.
  • Cosmetic reasons — when gums cover a large part of the teeth, reshaping them can create a more balanced look.
  • Access for treatment — removing a small amount of tissue can make it easier to clean and restore a tooth properly.

What the Procedure Involves

The gum line is adjusted so more of the tooth is visible above the gums. Depending on the situation, this may involve only soft tissue or also a small amount of bone. Your dentist will explain which approach fits your teeth after an examination.

Laser dentistry may offer a more comfortable option than drills and other non-laser tools for some procedures involving soft or hard tissue. Ask our team whether it applies to your care.

Planning Your Visit

Dr. Sam Kreit, DMD, DDS, and our team can examine the area, talk through your goals, and explain whether crown lengthening makes sense for you. Healing time and any follow-up restorative work vary from person to person, so bring your questions. We are happy to go over them with you.
